Summary

  • Eivind has built a PC capable of running Windows 98 and DOS-based games, as the modern hardware, software and operating systems no longer support these.
  • Emulation remains a popular solution, however, for those who want to use the original hardware the ISA bus, which featured on PCs of this era, is no longer available in modern machines.
  • This custom build uses the Vortex86EX system-on-module, which features a 32-bit x86 processor and therefore is able to run software built for DOS, as well as having the ISA capability to enable sound cards and other accessories from this time.
  • The motherboard uses a Crystal CS4237B chip connected to the ISA bus to perfectly replicate a SoundBlaster card, while expansion ports can add additional sound cards, including ones with Yamaha OPL chips.
  • This new build also features a serial port, virtual floppy drive and microSD card reader to make it interact with modern machines.
