While laser headlights were first introduced by BMW back in 2013 in its i8 model, both BMW and Audi are now phasing the technology out in favour of LEDs.
The primary reason for this is that US regulations on headlight brightness do not differ much from those for conventional bulbs, thereby making lasers pointless.
Laser headlights are unable to outperform older lighting technologies without falling foul of these rules, thus making them largely obsolete.
However, it should be noted that these regulations only apply to the US market, meaning that laser headlights are still an option in other markets.
Nevertheless, the fact that LEDs are improving all the time means they are becoming a more appealing option for automakers.
