Increased demand for electricity, driven by data centres and the electrification of devices previously powered by fossil fuels, is being addressed in China with a giant solar energy project - a new take on the Great Wall of China.
Called the Great Solar Wall, it is 250 miles long and has a capacity of 100GW, providing enough energy to power Beijing, although more likely to be used for industrial operations in the Kubuqi desert, where it is located.
As an extra benefit, previous solar installations in China have been shown to help combat desertification, by holding dunes in place and letting plants grow in the shade they provide.
The project is expected to be completed by 2030, with 5.4GW already installed by 2024.
