Summary

  • Increased demand for electricity, driven by data centres and the electrification of devices previously powered by fossil fuels, is being addressed in China with a giant solar energy project - a new take on the Great Wall of China.
  • Called the Great Solar Wall, it is 250 miles long and has a capacity of 100GW, providing enough energy to power Beijing, although more likely to be used for industrial operations in the Kubuqi desert, where it is located.
  • As an extra benefit, previous solar installations in China have been shown to help combat desertification, by holding dunes in place and letting plants grow in the shade they provide.
  • The project is expected to be completed by 2030, with 5.4GW already installed by 2024.
