A keyboard designed by Modern Hobbyist features separate left and right keyboard ‘halves’ to aid comfortable usage for each hand, connected by a cable.
The microcontroller STM32 reads the keys, running the per-key LED lighting and LCD screens on each half, whilst transmitting data upstream via a USB-C connection.
The keyboard uses low-profile Kailh Choc switches, connected to hotswap-compatible sockets for easy switch replacement, with off-the-shelf blank keycaps.
Keyboards with staggered columnar layouts perhaps take time to adapt to, although LCD screens can display keymaps to assist.
Examples of other split keyboard designs have previously been created, including a humorous adaptation involving literally sawing a keyboard in half.
