Summary

  • Proponents of solar power in the US solar energy industry have begun using President Trump’s favourite terminology in a bid to win over conservatives and maintain the speed of solar power adoption in the country.
  • Trump is known to be sceptical about solar, but advocates of the technology have been keen not to upset him given his power over energy policy.
  • The Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA) recently adopted a new slogan, “American Energy DOMINANCE”, as well as stating goals of “eliminating dependence on China” and “reducing red tape in the energy sector”, policies it believes will appeal to those of a conservative bent.
  • The gamble seems to be paying off; according to a recent Pew Research survey, despite Republican support for new solar farms slumping from 84% to 64% between 2020 and 2024, solar still represents more than 80% of new electrical generating capacity added to the US grid.
