The Mysterious Origins of the Most Energetic Neutrino Ever Detected
1 min read
Summary
On 23 February 2023, a particle detector recorded the arrival of the highest-energy neutrino ever detected, with an estimated energy of 220 petaelectronvolts (PeV).
While it doesn’t provide any clues as to the nature of its source, the detection of this single particle is exciting as it suggests there could be Cosmic processes – and possibly even new phenomena – taking place across the universe.
At present, the possibilities for the neutrino’s origin include its being a manifestation of a new ultra-high-energy cosmic process, or a marker for previously unmapped astrophysical sources.
Therefore, the detection of further particles like this would help scientists to understand more about the cosmos.
