AstraZeneca has made its flu vaccine FluMist available online for home delivery in 34 states, following approval from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for home administration last September.
The vaccine, which protects against four types of flu strains, is prescribed after a medical screening and shipped directly to consumers, who AstraZeneca hopes to encourage to get vaccinated by removing obstacles such as fear of needles and the time required to schedule and attend a clinic appointment.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported that the flu vaccine rate among adults dropped to 47% in adults, and 49.2% among children, during the 2024-25 season, which was characterised by at least 27,000 deaths and 610,000 hospitalizations.
AstraZeneca said FluMist is not yet available in all states due to local pharmacy laws, but the company aims to provide the home spray vaccine across the contiguous states.
