Summary
Telehealth start-up Outro has launched in the US to help people come off antidepressants.
It currently operates in seven states, including California and New York, and was co-founded by CEO Brandon Goode, psychologist Mark Horowitz, and Tyler Dyck.
Over 11% of US adults were on medication for depression as of 2023, with women twice as likely to use it as men, according to the CDC.
However, coming off the drugs can cause issues such as nausea and dizziness, with some estimates suggesting that up to one in five people withdrawing experience these effects.
Outro offers a personalised tapering schedule for a monthly subscription fee, starting at $125, and patients are paired with a clinician, which could be a nurse practitioner or a psychiatrist.
The platform currently focuses on selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs), but plans to branch out to treatments for ADHD and anxiety.
