In this first part of our conversation with MIT professor Elfatih Eltahir, we discuss his personal experience of growing up in Sudan, in the Nile River Basin, and his path to becoming an expert on hydrology, and the intersection of climate and social sciences in the context of the Nile, as well as other regions of the world.
How Eltahir’s work in climate science has included both developing regional climate models and also conducting very detailed studies on topics like malaria, and its intersection with climate change, in the Ethiopian Highlands.
And we begin to discuss the importance of adaptation in the face of climate change, and some of the projects he has been working on to address these significant challenges.
