Summary
According to gaming publication Rock, Paper, Shotgun, Shenmue, released in 1999, is the most influential game of all time, according to a public poll held by BAFTA (the British Academy of Film and Television Arts).
The vote saw Shenmue triumph over the likes of Doom, Super Mario Bros and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.
Sega’s open-world adventure laid the foundation for future games such as the Yakuza series, with its QTEs (quick-time events) and emphasis on narrative and world simulation.
It also pioneered features that later became commonplace, including a day-and-night system and varying weather patterns, both of which factored into gameplay.
However, some observers claimed the result reflected “brigading among passionate game fans” who piled into a single title, rather than the more mainstream inclusions predicted beforehand.
