Fatekeeper looks like a spiritual successor to Dark Messiah, but where's the kick?

Summary
Paraglacial, a team comprised of former Spellforce devs, is making a new first-person RPG called Fatekeeper, which is inspired by the melee combat of the cancelled Hellraid and the immersive world of Dark Messiah of Might and Magic.
It is meant to be a more story-driven experience, with focus on the detail of melee combat and the environment, which is partly inspired by the German Alps, where the studio is based.
The game world is not open world, but designed to offer multiple different trajectories and a dense narrative, according to creative director Raphael Lubke.
The gameplay shown includes combat with weighted swings and consequential animations, environmental physics, and ability sorts akin to Skyrim and Dark Souls.
The author is cautiously hopeful, but wants to see more innovation in flavourful game mechanics, rather than just flashy visuals.
