Chris Roberts hopes Squadron 42 will be “almost as big” as GTA VI next year

Summary
Squadron 42, the single-player Star Citizen spin-off, has faced numerous delays and isn’t expected until 2026, 11 years after its initial release date.
Cloud Imperium Games CEO Chris Roberts hopes that the title will be received favourably, in a similar manner to Grand Theft Auto VI, which is also slated for 2026.
This may be a lofty comparison given the astronomical success of the GTA franchise; Grand Theft Auto V has sold 215 million copies so far, with the online mode regularly attracting 20-30 million players each month.
That being said, Roberts Space Industries does have over a million players who play the Star Citizen alpha monthly, and 25 million who have tried it at least once.
Whether Roberts’ ambition for Squadron 42 to be “the biggest-budget AAA game [of the year]” is realistic or not, the game’s development budget of 859mmassivelyexceedstheinitialcrowdfundinggoalof1m.
