Summary
Ars Technica technology journalist Andrew Cunningham is to write a monthly column about DOS games for the website, starting with a review of the 1995 game Descent, the first fully 3D and six-degrees-of-freedom shooter game he played in his teenage years, which he says “was a totally new thing” back then.
Developed by Parallax Studios and published by Interplay, Descent was a best-selling game that also helped popularise the shareware distribution model.
It was one of the launch titles on GOG’s open beta in 2008, but was removed in 2015 when its publisher stopped paying royalties to the developer, before being reinstated in 2017.
Parallax Studios was closed down and became Volition, which was recently shut down by parent company Embracer Group, which is known for acquiring successful games studios and laying off staff.
