CEO Sam Altman had previously stated that OpenAI was ‘on the wrong side of history’ regarding open AI models, but now says that the company has been thinking about releasing one for some time and it ‘feels important to do’.
OpenAI’s new model will need to be trained cheaply to compete with DeepSeek’s offering, which was trained at a fraction of the cost of most large AI models.
The new model will be made available through OpenAI’s chatbot and the cloud, and rigorous testing will be carried out to ensure it cannot be misused.
