To Truly Fix Siri, Apple May Have to Backtrack on One Key Thing—Privacy

Summary
According to a report from Bloomberg, the upcoming new Siri which was due for release this year, has been delayed indefinitely.
This new version of Siri has been dubbed Apple Intelligence and was expected to upgrade Apple’s voice assistant with chatbot smarts, much like ChatGPT.
The disappointment of the delayed release is another in a long line of letdowns from Apple, with the original launch of Siri in 2011 also overhyped.
Siri was originally spun off as an independent company before being acquired by Apple and there have been issues with the functionality of the voice assistant since its inception.
The new Apple Intelligence is based around two core components, a small language model that runs on the iPhone and more complex queries that are sent to OpenAI.
Compared to other chatbots, Apple’s on-iPhone AI system is tiny, and it is not clear what tasks the new Siri will be able to perform.
With the delayed release, Apple Intelligence (the new Siri) might not be released until the iPhone 17 is launched, if at all.
The approach that Apple takes with its privacy emphasis may also cause issues with the rolling out of a fully functional AI-based voice assistant.
