Democrats in the House Oversight Committee have sent two dozen letters to federal agency leaders requesting information on their plans for AI software installations following recent reports that Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) is looking to automate tasks using AI tools and wants access to sensitive data.
The committee is seeking to ensure the use of AI is legal and that steps are being taken to protect Americans’ private data, and to ascertain whether Musk could be using AI to enrich himself and boost his own AI model, Grok.
The Democrats are also concerned that the DOGE is operating in an opaque and frenzied fashion, leading to concerns that the handling of sensitive information is unclear, and there are no safeguards in place.
Letters were sent to the departments of Education, Treasury, and Health and Human Services, as well as the US Army and the GSA, which has already started using a chatbot called GSAi with 1,500 workers.
