DOGE’s $1 Federal Spending Limit Is Straight Out of the Twitter Playbook

Summary
Katie Drummond and Zoe Schiffer, WIRED’s director of business and industry, discuss credit card freezes and the use of AI at DOGE, and how each is a page from the Elon Musk/Twitter playbook.
Elon Musk has said that $1 spending limit is an effort to simplify the credit card program and to root out wasteful spending, hinting at fraud and grifters.
Since that story was published, the spending limit has rolled out across federal agencies, and employees are stockpiling office supplies, faced with basic functions of their jobs being paralyzed.
DOGE is also repurposing existing government software to possibly conduct mass firings of government workers, as well as developing chatbots for government use.
There are valid and credible uses of AI in government, but DOGE’s rushed use of AI could lead to mistakes and biases being baked in.
