Summary

  • On 28 February 2025, just over a year after its launch, AI-enhanced hardware gadget the Humane AI Pin was switched off, leaving owners of the $700 device out of pocket and disappointed.
  • However, a band of dedicated hackers set about finding a way to keep their Pins alive, and it is now being reborn, according to one member of a Discord group of like-minded individuals.
  • The Pin was intended to offer an alternative to smartphones, allowing wearers to take pictures, display text messages and communicate with an AI chatbot, as well as offering holographic laser displays.
  • But it failed to live up to expectations, and its manufacturer, Humane, announced it would cease operations on 28 February.
  • The company also offered little in the way of concessions to disappointed Pin owners, offering refunds only on purchases made within the previous 90 days.
  • But the dedicated user base has continued to tinker with the device.
  • One member of the group managed to gain access to the Android Debug Bug tools, meaning the encryption could be bypassed and the device could be used as intended.
