As AI tools become more embedded in US classrooms, teachers are increasingly having to set the boundaries for their use, particularly in respect to writing prompts and student cheating.
Teachers are largely using the technology to generate quizzes, create differentiated instruction, and adapt texts to reading levels, but concerns persist over whether students can tell when tools like ChatGPT are inaccurate, biased, or fictitious.
Some teachers are pushing the idea of increased AI literacy, creating courses to help students learn how to question the ethical use of AI tools, while others are attempting to stay one step ahead of students by developing techniques to detect AI-written texts.
Despite the ethical concerns, teachers say the pace of change means AI is here to stay and they need to prepare students for a future workplace in which AI is “super important”.
