Micro-schools with fewer than 150 pupils and often based outside the regulatory framework that governs traditional public schools are an emerging trend in US education, with an estimated 750,000 to 2.1 million students already educated in this way.
Private initiatives such as Elon Musk’s Ad Astra, which he set up alongside a teacher from the elite Mirman School in Los Angeles, and the Montessori-style school in Bastrop, Texas, venture-funded by Musk’s Xplor Education, are examples of the micro-school concept.
The style of education provides the opportunity for personalised lesson plans, using onscreen AI tutors, while also saving classroom time for hands-on activities and socialization.
Generative AI is growing in use in daily life and is predicted to grow from $7.05 bnin 2025 t o$ 112.3bn by 2034.
School choice initiatives, including vouchers and tax credits, were introduced nationally this year and although private initiatives have been welcomed as a way to improve efficiency, critics argue they allow wealthy families to take public education dollars.
