Crypto mining in the US state of Kentucky may be on the wane, with local officials claiming it’s hard to pinpoint the number of crypto mines that are still active due to a lack of transparency in the industry, while the boom has begun to recede.
Anna Whites, a lawyer who has represented crypto mining clients, claims that crypto miners have a history of disappearing after a certain length of time, while a Chinese crypto mining company suing Mohawk Energy for breach of contract and alleged failure to pay hosting fees is one example of the “unraveling” of the blossoming industry in the state.
However, the infrastructure for crypto mining remains, and some locals are now looking at AI data centres in a positive light, in the hope that they could bring jobs and fibre optics to the state.
Data centres require a lot of power, leading some to regard the move to AI with caution, but others see the potential for progress that it could bring.
