Google AI chief Demis Hassabis believes the creation of artificial general intelligence (AGI) – when machines can perform any task that a human can – is possible within the next decade.
During Google’s annual I/O developers’ conference, Hassabis highlighted the company’sGemini AI models as a way to achieve AGI.
He noted their reasoning, agency, and world-modelling capabilities, saying these were key to creating smarter personal assistants and humanoid robots that can operate reliably in the real world.
Google also revealed a new AI-powered search tool, AI Mode, which is being rolled out in the US, along with an AI-powered shopping tool, and an expansion of its AI Overviews service.
Hassabis said Google was also looking into ways to increase the creativity of its AI models, including having them play games inside 3D worlds, something he said would require AGI to understand the world.
