OpenAI has launched a new AI coding tool, called Codex, allowing professional programmers to automate some of their tasks, which the company claims is safer and more transparent than its rivals.
Available through ChatGPT Pro, the web-based tool runs on a virtual computer, enabling it to navigate folders and files, run commands and test the code it has written.
It works alongside humans to delegate tasks, with an ultimate aim of becoming more like a “virtual coworker”, according to Josh Tobin, lead of the agents research team at OpenAI.
The launch precedes a more capable tool expected to be released by Google next week and comes as OpenAI is reportedly in talks to acquire AI coding startup Windsurf for $3bn.
