In 2025, AI innovators will aim to make models more useful to a wider audience, rather than just focusing on making them bigger and more advanced, opines Steven Levy, in his latest Wired column, which explores the AI highlights that may unfold in the year ahead.
Last year, the focus was on creating AI “wrappers”, fast and dirty applications that provided use cases for actual people, but 2023 saw a countermovement of startups attempting to create more substantial products.
The iPhone revolution was driven by a shift from clunky web apps to powerful native apps and it is predicted that the future of the AI market will follow a similar trajectory.
It is expected that there will be a flood of new AI application announcements this year, particularly in the following five areas: customer service; coding; medicine; grant writing; and helping people to better utilise AI without having to become masters of prompt-whispering.
However, it is warned that granting agency to software robots carries risk, particularly when AI is far from perfect.
